Hardwood and softwood differ only in the kind of tree they originate from, not in the degree of hardness of the wood itself. Softwood is derived from coniferous trees, which often develop quickly because they retain their leaves throughout the year. They develop more quickly as a result, making them more effective and ultimately less expensive. If properly maintained, you should be able to use it for 15 years, but if not, that could drop to less than 10. Hardwood is produced by slow-growing, broad-leafed, usually deciduous trees that shed their leaves. If treated and kept up properly, this decking can last up to 35 years or longer, although it is more difficult to work with than softwood. It can also actually get prettier with time and ages better.
The main downside is cost, but that when factoring in the extra life it can be a worthwhile investment (if you are aware that it requires maintenance).
Composite decking has made improvements recently to provide a robust and secure product, after originally finding it difficult to gain traction. Although composite decks are more expensive, you should expect them to endure 25 to 30 years. However, compared to wood decking, it requires less upkeep (such as detergent washing). Lighter coloured composite decking is less affected by direct sunlight, although it can still get rather warm. Finally, considering the environmental advantages, it is not a natural product since almost all wood nowadays comes from sustainable sources.
